NY Times appoints Liu deputy editor of “The Upshot”

Lowen Liu

The following excerpt was sent out from The New York Times’ editor of “The Upshot” Kevin Quealy:

I’m thrilled to announce Lowen Liu will be The Upshot’s deputy editor.

He comes to us from Slate, where he worked for 12 years, serving at various times as its deputy editor, managing editor and copy chief.

Lowen’s range, creativity and curiosity are a perfect match for The Upshot. He is a seasoned and talented editor of traditional written work, having edited many of Slate’s most distinctive writers and shaped some of its most impactful stories.

Allison Benedikt, now the editorial director of Opinion, worked with Lowen for a decade at Slate and called him “sharp, hard-working, quick-moving but also incredibly thoughtful.” Jared Hohlt, the editorial director of T Magazine, said, “Before I started at Slate, a colleague told me that Lowen’s editorial instincts were never wrong, which seemed impossible — except that person was right.”

Lowen studied computer science at Stanford and creative writing at Michigan.

Please join me in welcoming him.
