NY Times appoints COO Levien as its new chief executive

The New York Times has named Meredith Kopit Levien as its new chief executive. In her new role, Levien will oversee a global expansion that aims to reach 10m subscribers within five years.

In her new role, Levien will succeed Mark Thompson, reports Financial Times.

Levien has been with the Times for a little over 7 years joining the company in 2013 as executive vice president, advertising. As of now, she holds the post of executive vice president and chief operating officer.

Prior to joining the Times, Levien was first ForbesLife group publisher and then chief revenue officer at Forbes Media LLC. Also, she was publisher, 02138 Magazine at Atlantic Media.

In addition, Levien has also held the posts of advertising director and associate publisher at The Atlantic and served as director, member services at Advisory Board Company.

Levien added that “at a time when the free press remains under pressure”, she would “continue to invest in and defend the high-quality, independent journalism on which our democracy depends.”
