NY Times appoints Bates photo director of Opinion

Jacqueline Bates

The New York Times has tapped Jacqueline Bates to serve as director of photography for Opinion. An excerpt from the announcement reads:

She and the photo team in Opinion will keep working to define and maintain a visual identity for Opinion photography that feels significantly different from that of the news report while also ensuring that it is aesthetically striking, and infused with conceptual clarity and a distinctive point of view.

Jackie is the founding photography director of The California Sunday Magazine, the Pulitzer Prize-winning print magazine, and “Pop-Up Magazine,” the acclaimed live-magazine show. Under her direction, California Sunday won the National Magazine Award for photography in 2016 and 2017, the first title in 25 years to win in consecutive years.

Jackie’s work has been recognized by the Art Directors Club, Society of Publication Designers (where California Sunday was named Magazine of the Year twice), Lucie Foundation and more. She has been featured in Artsy, British Journal of Photography, and the “Photowork” podcast. She is currently an adjunct professor at California College of the Arts and, starting in spring 2023, Parsons School of Design.

Previously, she was the senior photo editor of W Magazine and worked in the photo departments of ELLE, Interview and Wired. Bates holds an M.F.A. in photography from the School of Visual Arts.
