NY Times announces promotions in Washington

The following excerpt announcement was sent out by The New York Times assistant managing editor and Washington bureau chief Elisabeth Bumiller:

Margaret Ho, our previous Saturday editor, is now an assistant editor overseeing a team of reporters who cover legal and other issues. Margaret has been our Saturday editor since 2019. Margaret joined the bureau in 2017 as a deputy night editor. Before that she was in Hong Kong, where she edited news and enterprise that originated in Asia.

Justine Makieli, an assistant editor and our day editor, will now be our Live editor in Washington. Justine has worked at The Times since 2013 as a copy editor and slot on the Metro, National/Foreign and Business desks. This will be her second time working on a desk named Live: She was a slot editor on the short-lived Live copy desk. Previously, she was a homepage editor at The Washington Post and copy and assignment editor at The Baltimore Sun.

Inyoung Kang, one of our deputy weekend editors, is our new day editor. Before Washington, Inyoung was an editor in New York and London, where she produced the homepage and wrote the morning and evening briefings. Before that, she was on the Metro, Business and Foreign/National copy desks in New York. She’s a graduate of N.Y.U. and Columbia University in Paris, where she earned her master’s in French history and literature.

Tom Kaplan, a former congressional correspondent, is now our Weekend Editor (for Saturdays) in Washington, where he will run the bureau for half of the weekend and oversee the frantic moments of the bulldog close. Tom joined the bureau in late 2016 to cover Capitol Hill. He started at The Times in 2010 as an intern for the Sports desk and covered Albany and the 2016 presidential campaign before coming to Washington.
