The following was sent out from The New York Times‘ Jia Lynn Yang and Monica Davey:
We are excited to announce a new deputy weekend editor and day editor, as we make sure our desk is able to drive coverage seven days a week.
Christine Chun, following a fantastic run on the Home team, will be our new deputy weekend editor. Under Mark Shimabukuro’s leadership, our weekend operation powers us through Saturday and Sunday, and sets us up well for every week so we don’t miss a beat. Christine will work closely with Mark to make sure we build on that success.
Christine joined The Times in June 2020 as a staff editor on the Home team, helping produce the home page and send push alerts. She became an assistant editor on the team in November 2020, a role in which she helped supervise and curate the home page and alerts, as well as organize and program stories for the page on weekends. Prior to The Times, she was a copy chief at Law360.
A Michigan native, Christine got her bachelor’s degree at the University of Michigan and her master’s degree in journalism at Columbia University.
For a number of months now, Pat Lyons has graciously stood in as our day editor. He’s shown such care and attention to detail that he’s going to take on the role formally.
Pat has worn many hats in his career at The Times, including day editor for now three different desks (BizDay, International and National). He originally came to the paper from The Associated Press in 1991 as a graphics editor, back when that was nearly a brand-new job, and rose to manage the business graphics cluster before moving to the “word side” as deputy editor for the relaunch of Sunday Money & Business.
Other editing roles followed for BizDay, the Week in Review, the Long Island Weekly and Continuous News, where he was deputy editor of a desk that combined what the home page team, the Live desk and Express do now. He moved from there to International in 2011 and joined National in 2017.
Please join us in congratulating both Christine and Pat.
