NY announces five promotions in Opinion

The following excerpt was sent out from The New York Times’ Kathleen Kingsbury:

I’m excited to share today the recent promotions in Opinion. I’m incredibly proud of these folks, honored to be their colleague and wanted to take a moment to fete their well-earned achievements.

Alicia Wittmeyer

When I start a story Alicia Wittmeyer edited, I know it’s going to stay with me long after the last word. A brilliant editor and a generous colleague, Alicia elevates every story, project, headline and Valentine generator she touches. In her time with Special Projects, she’s helped launch our newsletter initiative, taken us on a global tour of climate change (ask her about baobab trees in Botswana — she has thoughts!), brought readers into the alternate universe of how #MeToo played out in Sweden, and shepherded a monumental series that reframed mental health for our readers while also leading the team during Meeta’s parental leave last year. Her dedication and enthusiasm for the work we do inspires me every day. For all those reasons and more, it is a pleasure to share that we are promoting Alicia to assistant editor.

Madeleine Kruhly

Joining the department in 2015, Madeleine Kruhly quickly became a trusted colleague on the audience team, ensuring our pieces reached a wide readership, not to mention being an undeniable force in expertly written headlines. Maddy has also consistently partnered with editors around the department, including the Special Projects team, to create and execute creative audience plans. She’s a crucial player in Opinion’s big swings, from the climate Postcards project to I Was Wrong — and everything in between. On top of her existing audience efforts, I’m thrilled to promote Maddy to senior staff editor and formally recognize her as the Audience lead for Special Projects.

Jennifer Brown

Jennifer Brown joined The Times in 2018 and has since proven herself to be a strong audience editor with impeccable judgment.  In recognition of her hard work, Jen has been promoted to staff editor. In her new role, Jen will assume more independence on home-page programming and headline testing. She will also be a strategy partner on Opinion’s off-platform presence as the social media landscape changes. Her creativity and sophisticated approach will be instrumental as our audience strategy evolves.

Jeff Geld

Jeff Geld has been the engineer for “The Ezra Klein Show” since the show came over to The Times in 2021 and has consistently proven himself to be a leader on the team. As he steps into his new role as senior audio engineer, and takes some new responsibilities, I look forward to seeing him bring his signature shine to projects across Opinion Audio.

Tim Schneider

One of Tim Schneider’s super powers is his ability to see around corners and anticipate where news is headed — and that’s not just because he lives on Greenwich Mean Time, waking long before the sun rises in New York. Over the past year, Tim has overseen our guest essay coverage of the war in Ukraine, the turmoil in Europe and the United Kingdom, and the contentious elections in Brazil. He also was a key collaborator on our World Cup coverage. In addition to having a keen sense of signature voices fluent in the language of global affairs, he’s also a generous and thoughtful editor who compels readers (and his own colleagues) to think deeper. With this, it’s my pleasure to promote Tim to senior staff editor.
