New York Times hires Garland as assistant editor on Metro

Sarah Garland

The following excerpt announcement was sent out from The New York Times Metro editor Jim Dao:

For months, we’ve been looking for the right person to oversee some of Metro’s most important beats, including education, health care, housing and homelessness. The wait is over: We’ve found the ideal editor in Sarah Garland.

Sarah comes to us from The Hechinger Report, a nonprofit education news outlet that produces deeply reported pieces, some in partnership with The Times, about the nation’s schools and universities.

As Hechinger’s executive editor, Sarah was “adored by all the reporters,” said our former colleague Lawrie Mifflin, who is its managing editor.

Before joining Hechinger in 2010, Sarah worked for Newsweek International and The New York Sun, covering immigration and criminal justice. (She was also, early in her career, a stringer for Metro.)

Sarah graduated from Macalester College in Minnesota with a bachelor’s degree in urban studies and earned a master’s degree in journalism and Latin American studies from New York University.

She starts the week of April 18.
