Mother Jones announces two newsroom promotions

Mother Jones has appointed Sophie Murguia to deputy managing editor and Ruth Murai to research editor.

Sophie Murguia

In her new role, Murguia will oversee production of the bimonthly print magazine and edit stories for the magazine and website. Recently, Murguia held the post of research editor. Initially, she was with Mother Jones as an editorial fellow.

During her six months with Pacific Standard Magazine, she oversaw all aspects of the fact-checking and legal review process, and ran the editorial fellowship program. She also wrote about immigration, with a focus on interior enforcement and immigration detention.

She served as an assistant editor and culture editor at Outside Magazine.

Murguia has a bachelor’s degree from Amherst College and a master’s degree from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.

Ruth Murai

As research editor, Murai will manage a team fact-checking Mother Jones stories. Recently, she was a senior fellow. She joined Mother Jones in December 2021 as an editorial fellow.

Previously, Murai worked for more than three years at Jane Doe Films as a part-time research assistant and then joined the staff full time as an associate producer.

Murai has a B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles.
