More journalists leave in latest buyouts offered by Tribune

The owner of The Virginian-Pilot and Daily Press newspapers including their community publications, has accepted buyouts from 20 people in its Virginia news operations as part of companywide staff reductions.

According to a report by the Daily Press, among those leaving The Virginian-Pilot are sports reporter Ed Miller, news and former sports reporter Lee Tolliver, and photographer Steve Earley.

News reporters Mike Holtzclaw, Hugh Lessig and Tamara Dietrich, sports reporter Dave Johnson and photo editor Adrin Snider are leaving from the Daily Press.

Ryan Gilchrest, managing editor of the combined papers; Ron Crow, editor of Inside Business; and staffers from The Virginia Gazette in Williamsburg, and Coast in Nags Head, North Carolina are also accepting the buyouts.

In the latest announcement, former Tribune CEO Tim Knight said, “Operationally, we are in a better position now than at any time since spinning off as Tribune Publishing, and the successes we have enjoyed over the last year have allowed us to confidently take on the challenges facing our industry.”

Knight announced his resignation Monday. Tribune CFO Terry Jimenez was appointed the new CEO.
