Montreal Gazette EIC Archer departs amid corporate turmoil

Bert Archer

Bert Archer, editor-in-chief of The Montreal Gazette, will depart on June 30 along with deputy editor Lenie Lucci — leaving just one manager in the newsroom of Quebec’s oldest English-language daily newspaper.

Two years ago, the Gazette had seven managers on its team.

As reported in CTV News Montreal, Archer’s departure was announced by Postmedia’s chief content officer, Duncan Clark, who wrote to staff that the company recently had some “tough discussions” with the newsroom about the paper’s past and future.

Archer was a travel writer at The Wall Street Journal and held the posts of books columnist, copy editor, business travel columnist, travel writer and book reviewer at The Toronto Star.

He also worked as a copy editor, municipal columnist, business travel columnist, book reviewer and travel writer at The Globe and Mail; a travel writer at both the National Post and the Washington Post; and as a real estate columnist at Toronto Life Magazine.

Archer has a B.A. from the University of Toronto and an M.Phil from Trinity College in Dublin.
