The Marshall Project, the Pulitzer-winning nonprofit media organization covering criminal justice, has appointed Phil Trexler the new editor-in-chief for The Marshall Project – Cleveland.
In his new role with The Marshall Project – Cleveland, Trexler will oversee the Cleveland newsroom’s investigative reporting on Cuyahoga County’s criminal justice system and guide reporters in investigative, data and community engagement journalism that directly serves local audiences.
Trexler joins The Marshall Project – Cleveland from WKYC in Cleveland, where he spent nearly eight years as an executive producer of investigations and was responsible for researching and developing investigations into TV and web packages. He also spent more than two decades as a newspaper reporter, including 16 years covering crime and criminal justice at the Akron Beacon Journal.
Trexler has won several awards for his work in broadcast, digital, and print media, including a regional Edward R. Murrow and four regional Emmys. He was also recognized several times as the best news writer by the Ohio Associated Press Media Editors.
Trexler has also written two books: “The Cleveland Indians Yesterday & Today” and “Ballparks.”
