Louisville Courier Journal staff members unionize

New reporters and veteran journalists at the Courier Journal have formed a union, the Courier Journal Guild, which will join the Indianapolis NewsGuild Local 34070.

The union demands accountability from its owner Gannett Co. Inc. and wants Gannett to voluntarily recognize the union.

A petition has also been filed with the National Labor Relations Board.

The following emailed response, attributed to Amy Garrard, Gannett labor relations counsel was received:

“We respect the right of employees at the Courier Journal to make a fully informed choice for themselves whether to unionize or not unionize. Gannett strongly supports the National Labor Relations Board’s (NLRB) election process and has always participated in that process fairly and in good faith. Central to that process is a democratic election in which every employee’s voice is heard.”

Founded as The Focus of Politics, Commerce and Literature in 1826, the Courier Journal was purchased by Gannett in 1986 for $300 million.
