Lopez joins Washington Post opinions as contributing columnist

Christy E. Lopez has joined the Washington Post opinions section as a contributing columnist.

She brings an experienced voice on topics related to policing, including police brutality and reform, and criminal justice to the newsroom.

“Christy brings to The Post deep experience from her work focused on issues relating to policing,” said Fred Hiatt, editorial page editor at The Post. “Her thoughtful, clear analysis will give readers an informed perspective as we continue to provide a platform for the national discussion on these topics.”

Lopez is a professor from Practice at the Georgetown University Law Center in Washington where she teaches courses on policing and criminal procedure and co-directs Georgetown’s Innovative Policing Program.

She has also served as deputy chief in the Special Litigation Section of the Civil Rights Division at the U.S. Department of Justice. In addition, she has also held the post of federal court monitor of the Oakland, California Police Department for Senior District Judge Thelton E. Henderson of the Northern District of California.

Lopez holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of California and a juris doctor from the Yale Law School.
