LA Times promotes Burkes, Hubbard on Fast Break desk

The Los Angeles Times has promoted Dawn Burkes and Amy Hubbard to deputy editors on the Fast Break desk.

Dawn Burkes

In her new role, Burkes will oversee the entertainment news coverage, and continue to direct the team’s daily coverage.

She joined the Times in December 2020 as a multiplatform editor. She then served as a temporary editor for arts and entertainment, before being appointed entertainment news editor.

She freelanced and worked at The Dallas Morning News for more than 11 years. She held various posts, including copy editor, assistant arts editor/music, and entertainment writer/TV critic.

Previously, she worked at The Dallas Morning News from 1996 to 1999 as a layout editor. In addition, she has also worked at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, USA Today, The Tallahassee Democrat and The Miami Herald.

Burkes graduated from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University.

Amy Hubbard

Recently, Hubbard was a night editor on the Fast Break desk. As per the Times:

“In her new role, Hubbard will continue to direct news coverage in the latter part of the day, not only for Fast Break but across all departments, crafting and coordinating breaking news efforts and creating a playbook for the following day’s coverage plans.”

Hubbard joined the Times in November 1993. Until March 2015, she worked in various departments, serving as copy chief for the daily Calendar, Travel, Books and morning news copy desk.

She also held the posts of SEO chief and morning editor on the Metro desk.

After that, Hubbard left to join NerdWallet, where she worked for more than four years as an assigning editor/banking and copy editor.

She returned to the Times in November 2018 as a multiplatform editor and then held the post of assistant editor for newsletters.

Hubbard, a journalism graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia, started at the Los Angeles Daily News as a copy editor and then assistant travel editor.
