Kecher joins NY Times as a senior commissioning editor to lead Op-Docs

Kathleen Kingsbury

The following announcement was sent out from The New York Times Opinion editor Kathleen Kingsbury and director and executive producer of Opinion Video Adam Ellick:

We’re delighted to announce that Christine Kecher is joining The Times as a senior commissioning editor to lead Op-Docs, our Emmy and Oscar-nominated short film series.

Christine was previously the manager of feature films at A&E Networks, where she oversaw the development, production and distribution of features and shorts for the company’s theatrical documentary division, A&E IndieFilms. Since 2019, she has served as the lead production executive for IndieFilms projects, including the Academy Award-winning short film “Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You’re a Girl)” and “Whirlybird,” which won a feature documentary award at Sundance in 2020.

Prior to joining A&E, Christine worked in financial research and received her Master of Business Administration from New York University’s Stern School of Business, where she specialized in entertainment and media and finance.

Christine will work closely with Lindsay Crouse, who has been interim head of Op-Docs and played a part of all 370 films published over the past decade. Lindsay’s ambition, wisdom and leadership led to a superlative year, including four Emmy nominations (our most ever); two films accepted into the Sundance Film Festival (also our most ever) and one in the Tribeca Film Festival; and the creation of several special projects.

Entering its 10th year, Op-Docs is Opinion’s series of short, interactive, and virtual reality documentary films. Each film, which premiere on NYTimes.com, is produced with wide creative latitude by both renowned and emerging filmmakers. The Op-Docs team will continue to work closely with the broader Opinion department and with The Times’s film and television department.

Christine starts on Feb. 1. Please join us in welcoming her to Opinion.
