Independent nonprofit newsroom The Kansas City Beacon has appointed Scott Canon as its first editor-in-chief. In his new role, he will helm the Beacon’s coverage, mostly focused on education, health and the government’s impact.
Commenting on his appointment, Canon said:
“I am thrilled to play a part in The Beacon’s mission to provide smart, unbiased reporting to the people of Kansas and Missouri.
“I look forward to working with our talented reporters to play the important role of public service journalism. We aim to shed light on the issues that matter in the health and well-being of Kansans, Missourians, and their communities.”
He joins from The Kansas News Service, where he served as managing editor. At The Kansas City Star, served as a reporter/editor, reporter/assistant city editor and investigative reporter/editor. He spent than 22 years there, from August 1989 to March 2012.
Canon has a bachelor’s degree from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale and a master’s degree from the University of Illinois Springfield.
