Hell Gate, a new publication covering New York City, has launched. The staff includes:

Christopher Robbins, a general assignment reporter and blogger. He has worked at Gothamist and WNYC, among others.

Esther Wang, a New York-based writer. Recently, she was a senior politics reporter at Jezebel and a columnist for the New Republic.

Max Rivlin-Nadler, who has reported for The New York Times, NPR and the Intercept. For the past several years, he was a reporter on the San Diego-Tijuana border.

Nick Pinto, who focuses on police, courts, jails and prisons. His work has appeared in the Village Voice, New York Times Magazine, Gothamist, the New Republic, Rolling Stone, the Intercept, and more.

Sydney Pereira, who covers health, labor, and climate change. She is a contributing writer for Prism and founding member of Hell Gate. Previously, she was a reporter for Gothamist and WNYC.

A few words from the website read:

Hell Gate is a website owned and run by journalists covering New York City, featuring a mixture of blog posts, features, columns, and investigations. Our name comes from the city’s sturdiest (and handsomest) bridge over its most treacherous currents.

Ultimately, our goal is to start a subscription-funded, worker-owned company, kind of like Defector Media or Discourse Blog, or Racket, or the Colorado Sun.

We’ll have a lot more to say about this soon. For now, enjoy the free blog posts.
