Akilah Johnson

Akilah Johnson will be joining the Washington Post’s health and science team to cover health disparities, a crucial area of coverage during these unprecedented times.

Her new role begins Jan. 11.

Currently, Johnson is a reporter at ProPublica, where she has covered the intersection of health, politics and race. Before that, Johnson was with Boston Globe Media for 10 years, joining as a general assignment reporter, specializing in long-term enterprise stories, breaking news and watchdog reporting.

There, she was also part of a Spotlight team that was a Pulitzer finalist.

Johnson also worked at the Sun-Sentinel for more than 7 years, joining as a public safety reporter. Then, she became education/multimedia reporter.

She was also a METPRO reporter at the Los Angeles Times, one of 10 fellows in the Tribune Co.’s Minority Editorial Training Program, working at the metro desk.

During the 2018-2019 academic year, Akilah was a John S. Knight fellow at Stanford University.

Johnson holds Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Miami, where she studied journalism, English and multimedia studies.
