Houston Chronicle names Matos ME for audience and content strategy

Alejandra Matos has joined the Houston Chronicle as managing editor for audience and content strategy. This makes her the first Latina to hold the post and to appear on the newsroom’s masthead.

The Chronicle reports:

“In her role, Matos will oversee the newsroom’s audience development teams as well as statewide content initiatives including a nine-person Austin bureau covering state government and politics, a statewide weather team and data team.”

Recently, Matos served as director of strategy and operations at Hearst, and then as senior director for audience development. Before that,  she held the posts of newsletter strategist, senior audience development manager and deputy director of audience development at Wirecutter.

Previously, she worked at the Houston Chronicle from August 2017 to December 2018 in the roles of politics and government reporter, and Texas newsletter editor. She also reported for The Washington Post and the Star Tribune, where she held the posts of digital metro reporter, data visualization reporter, whistleblower columnist and education reporter.

Matos has a B.A. in multimedia journalism from the University of Texas at El Paso and a master’s degree in journalism from American University.
