Previously, Caplan was a projects reporter at The State Newspaper and a staff writer for The Tampa Tribune, where he covered government, education, features and sports.

He also reported on sports, education, government and breaking news for the Citrus County Chronicle in Florida. He was also a sports correspondent at The Tampa Bay Times.
