Dumcius joins nonprofit news site CommonWealth

Gintautas Dumcius

GINTAUTAS DUMCIUS, who has spent nearly 20 years reporting on Boston and state politics, as well as neighborhood development and the courts, is joining the staff of CommonWealth.

His hiring is part of a planned expansion and makeover of the nonprofit news organization.

Dumcius most recently served as the Dorchester Reporter’s managing editor, and before that, as digital editor at the Boston Business Journal. A Quincy native who now lives with his family in Weymouth, Dumcius has also worked at the State House News Service, where he co-founded the MASSterList morning newsletter and reported on Maura Healey’s 2014 campaign for attorney general. At MassLive, he covered the UMass acquisition of Mount Ida College, General Electric’s decision to relocate its headquarters to Boston, and the PawSox move to Worcester.

He started his career at the Dorchester Reporter, a family-owned newspaper focused on Boston’s largest and most diverse neighborhood. In 2013, he oversaw coverage of the 2013 Boston mayor’s race and published a short ebook, “This Way to City Hall,” which melded stories from the campaign trail with fresh reporting on the final face-off between Marty Walsh and John Connolly.

Dumcius returned to the Dorchester Reporter in 2021 to lead coverage of that year’s historic mayoral contest and work with media partners on polling and television debates.

“The last several years have been a thrilling time to cover city and statewide politics and policies,” Dumcius said. “I’m excited by the opportunity to bring my nearly 20 years of experience to CommonWealth and help break down why it all matters to our audience.”
