Detroit papers to offer digital subscription service starting next week

For the first time in the newspaper’s 25-year history, Detroit News will be charging for coverage as it launches a digital subscription-only content with a redesigned detroitnews.com for readers who seek full access to all digital content.

The change will begin from Aug. 12.

While much of the breaking news content will remain free, some of the unique, in-depth and original stories will only be accessible to subscribers with the special introductory rate of a full-access digital subscription being as low as $3 for the first three months.

Editor and publisher Gary Miles said, “We need our most loyal readers to support the reliable local journalism they’ve come to know and expect. Long-term, revenue from digital subscribers is an essential part of maintaining our place as the most trusted news source in Michigan.”

Additionally, current subscribers to the print edition or the e-edition will have full access to the exclusive content.

A similar effort is under way at the Free Press, access to which would require a separate subscription.

The effort was initiated by Michigan.com, a partnership between the separate owners of The Detroit News and Detroit Free Press.
