Chicago Sun-Times CEO Nykia Wright announced today that she has left the newspaper after five years with the organization.
The move comes just a day before the one-year anniversary of the Chicago Public Media acquisition of the legacy newspaper. No reason was given in the statement announcing her departure today. Chicago Public Media CEO Matt Moog, who also serves as chair of the Sun-Times’ board of directors, will oversee day-to-day operations.
“I’m very grateful for Nykia’s leadership, especially as we brought together two outstanding and beloved news organizations, the Chicago Sun-Times and WBEZ Chicago, under the Chicago Public Media umbrella,” Moog said in the statement. “I wish her all the very best in her next chapter.”
Wright, 43, joined the Sun-Times in 2017 as chief operating officer; a year later, she was named interim CEO and took the job permanently in 2020. Under her leadership, the newspaper gained nonprofit status after being acquired by nonprofit media organization Chicago Public Media.
Wright, an Atlanta native, came to Chicago after earning her MBA at Dartmouth College. She was featured as a 40 Under 40 in 2018, when she was named interim CEO of the Sun-Times.
“Early in my career, I was challenged to better the world through business. Working at the Chicago Sun-Times gave me the opportunity to do just that,” Wright said in today’s statement. “(Executive Editor) Jennifer Kho has the right vision for the newsroom and the future of local news. Chicago is in very capable hands because of her leadership. I will miss leading this storied institution, but all good things eventually must come to an end. I look forward to sharing my future plans soon.”
