Center for Public Integrity hires two new reporters

Yvette Cabrera

Yvette Cabrera and Aaron Mendelson, two award-winning investigative reporters, will join the Center for Public Integrity as the newsroom aims to expand its coverage of inequality in the U.S.

Cabrera starts on May 9 and will cover inequality in economic and social well-being. She has reported on environmental justice, health, and policy at Grist. Before that, she was an environmental justice reporter at HuffPost.

Cabrera has also reported on criminal justice, immigration and environmental justice at ThinkProgress in Washington, D.C. She has contributed to the Guardian and reported for The Los Angeles Daily News, The Morning Call and Los Angeles Times. Cabrera also serves as vice president for digital of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists national board.

Cabrera graduated from Occidental College.

Aaron Mendelson

Mendelson, a senior reporter for data and investigations at Southern California Public Radio, begins his new job on June 6. He will report on threats to multiracial democracy.

For the past three years, he has taught at the University of Southern California and freelanced for various outlets, including Reuters, Mother Jones, Marketplace and more. He was also an intern at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.

His work has been honored with a Gerald Loeb Award for Local Reporting, a regional Edward R. Murrow Award for News Documentaries, and multiple Online News Association awards.

Mendelson holds a bachelor’s degree from Macalester College and a master’s degree in journalism from the University of California at Berkeley.
