BuzzFeed EIC Schoofs announces departure

Mark Schoofs

Mark Schoofs, editor-in-chief of BuzzFeed News, has announced that he will be leaving the company. The move comes as BuzzFeed announces plans to accelerate profitability by making several changes, including staff cuts.

The company has also offered voluntary buyouts to less than 30 employees (reporters and editors), who cover investigations, inequality, politics or science, and have worked for BuzzFeed for over a year.

Schoofs took the helm as editor-in-chief in May 2020. Along with this role, he was also a visiting professor at the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism.

He has also worked at other publications, including The Wall Street Journal, The Village Voice, and ProPublica.

Following Schoofs’ departure, Samantha Henig, BuzzFeed News’ VP for news strategy and operations, will run the newsroom on an interim basis.

Ariel Kaminer, executive editor of investigations, is also resigning.
