Jamil Smith has joined The Emancipator, housed within the Center for Antiracist Research at Boston University, as its editor-in-chief. As per reports:
“Smith will drive The Emancipator’s editorial vision and serve as a key partner to Payne in growing the rising media startup’s reach and impact nationwide.”
Smith commented:
“This is a singular opportunity. I’ve been an admirer of what The Emancipator has accomplished thus far, and it’s an honor to join the University and this staff. I look forward to continuing to help audiences think more critically about the emergency that is racial inequity.”
An award-winning journalist, he recently was an essayist at the Los Angeles Times, where he reported and wrote long-form commentary, opinion and news analysis articles.
Prior to that, he worked as a senior correspondent at Vox.com and as a senior writer at Rolling Stone, where he covered politics, identity and popular culture.
He freelanced, served as a senior national correspondent for MTV News and was a senior editor at The New Republic.
He has also worked at MSNBC, NFL Films, HBO Sports and CNN.
Smith graduated from the University of Pennsylvania.
