Blumenstein to become deputy editor in NY Times publisher’s office

New York Times publisher A.G. Sulzberger sent out the following announcement on Tuesday:

Colleagues,

I’m excited to announce that Rebecca Blumenstein is going to take on a new role, as deputy editor, Publisher’s Office. Rebecca will step away from the news cycle to become my day-to-day partner in supporting our journalism operations at a time when they are growing rapidly in size and ambition.

As she starts in the role, one of Rebecca’s key areas of focus will be on our workplace. Our shared goal is ensuring The Times remains the place where the world’s best journalists — and all of the rest of us who support them — can do the best, most impactful work of their careers. To that end, I’ve asked Rebecca to help me, Dean Baquet, Joe Kahn and Kathleen Kingsbury grapple with questions like how we better manage a much larger, more complex newsroom; how we absorb the right lessons from this extended period of remote working while planning our return to the office; how we ensure our work around diversity, equity and inclusion drives real, sustainable change; and how we ensure our mission of “without fear or favor” journalism thrives in an increasingly polarized world.

In taking on these and other efforts, Rebecca will work with leaders across the Newsroom, Opinion and throughout the company. She will also ensure The Times is regularly engaging outside our walls to make the case for our model of independent journalism, the values that make it possible, and its importance to society in a moment of growing pressure on the news media. Though she will report directly to me, she will remain a part of the masthead, reflecting the central importance of her connection with our newsroom leadership.

Rebecca was an obvious fit for this important new role, the need for which became clear to me over this challenging year. In her four years at The Times, she has proven herself a trusted journalistic leader and inspiring manager who drives change and finds solutions. She led an ambitious expansion and elevation of our Business report. She managed our digital report to historic gains in readership. Over the past year, she oversaw a major expansion of our Live coverage through one of the most relentless news cycles in recent history.

Through all of that work Rebecca has earned a reputation as an unusually thoughtful, empathetic and generous leader, who cares as deeply about our people and our culture as our journalism. She embodies the best of our longstanding traditions and values and looks to our potential with an infectious excitement. I know she will be an invaluable partner to me as we continue to push The Times forward.
