Nonprofit journalism sees accelerated growth

The idea of nonprofit journalism is increasing being seen as an attractive option.

According to the Institute for Nonprofit Journalism, nonprofit newsrooms have been launching at a pace of more than one a month in the U.S. for almost 12 years.

Nonprofit journalism is also enjoying an accelerated shift globally.

Additionally, this type of journalism has a different corporate structure. However, it does not change the need to earn money or to pay your employees. It also does not change the economics of journalism.

As media economics scholar Robert Picard has noted, the practice of journalism has been subsidized for centuries. Now, there is an increasing trend among organizations to turn to their readers for financial support.

This may be one way for nonprofit journalism to provide enough funding to keep going for years. Only when news would survive, it would win the trust of people back and increase public engagement.
