The Ames Tribune has tapped Kelly McGowan, producer at the Des Moines Register, as the publication’s new editor. McGowan has been with the Register for the past four years. She started as community content specialist and then became producer.

In her new role at the Tribune, McGowan will oversee the staff and production of the Tribune, its website and six affiliated weekly publications: the Boone News-Republican, Dallas County News, Nevada Journal, Perry Chief, Story County Herald and Tri-County Times.

“This community is important to me and I’m honored to be joining the hardworking journalists here to provide trustworthy coverage of Ames and the surrounding areas,” McGowan said. “I’m excited to connect with community members and bring readers stories about issues that affect them.”

Before joining the Register, McGowan was an editor with Mid America Publishing Company. She was also a writer at SIR Magazine and also worked at Iowa State Daily as a reporter.

McGowan has a bachelor’s degree in Spanish, journalism and mass communication from Iowa State University.
