CIR names Campwala CEO and Aggarwal editor-in-chief

The Center for Investigative Reporting has appointed Kaizar Campwala as CEO and Sumi Aggarwal as editor-in-chief.

Campwala brings deep experience in managing public interest news, audio and video journalism to the newsroom. He joins from Walt Disney Co., where he oversaw ABC News’ digital and streaming news businesses, including ABC News Live. He also expanded the news vertical on Hulu. He also co-founded and served as president of CALMatters, a statehouse reporting venture in Sacramento. He has also worked at Al Jazeera and also serves on the Board of Directors of Internews. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Brown University and an MBA from UCLA.

Aggarwal had been serving as interim editor-in-chief since March 2021. She is a veteran journalist who spent nearly a decade producing award-winning investigations for “60 Minutes.” She earned her undergraduate degree from UC Berkeley and her master’s from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. She has received numerous journalism awards, including the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award, several News Emmys, and an Edward R. Murrow Award, among others. She also launched the broadcast journalism program at the City College of New York and led executive communications for the Search and Maps teams at Google.
