BBC is planning on launching a ‘highly curated’ subscription video service initially aimed at North America focusing on politics, culture and ideas, with the possibility of an expansion o a wider international market.

“We are without question one of Britain’s strongest and best-known brands, synonymous with quality and accuracy worldwide,” said Lord Tony Hall, director general of BBC.

A team of executives at BBC Studios have been working on the new venture with staff being hired in New York to lead the launch.

Also, Tim Davie chief executive of BBC Studios, will become the director general of BBC in September, with one of his main obstacles being on how to secure the funding of the corporation.

BBC will face another challenge of competing with big names like Netflix, with approaching 200 million subscribers globally.

So, the question remains whether BBC can translate its worldwide reach into a substantial subscription business.
