Ready for the holiday weekend? The start of summer? This week’s ticker kicks off the season with news of top appointments at NPR, CNN Worldwide and The Guardian. We also have Axios hire and departure news, and the signoff of “Vice News Tonight.”
Corley takes the Midwest helm at NPR… NPR has tapped Cheryl Corley to serve as its permanent Midwest bureau chief after an internal search. Recently, she had been serving in an acting capacity. During her 28 years at NPR, Corley has covered all forms of stories from her home base in Chicago. She has been a key collaborator as part of NPR’s criminal justice vertical. Corley said, “It’s a job I’ve held on an acting basis since last August – editing and cultivating new voices for NPR and working with seasoned NPR and member station reporters. So, if you’ve heard about a good Midwest story,or know a reporter who needs to get on the national air — send them my way! Looking forward to working with them and making NPR sound better than ever.”
Nelson’s new veep role at CNN… CNN Worldwide has appointed Phil Nelson to the post of executive VP of CNN International Commercial. In his new role, he will lead international business operations and the network’s dealings with commercial partners. He will also work with partners across the Warner Bros. Discovery business. Since 2019, he had been serving as chief operating officer. “CNNIC has an incredible track record in unlocking value for both CNN and our commercial partners across a wide range of sectors. As we look to the future, we are creating new ways for partners to work with CNN that enable advertisers to engage with our audiences wherever they consume CNN and for broadcasters, publishers, Out of Home partners and platforms to access and leverage our world-renowned content and journalism,” Nelson said. “In a fast-changing media landscape, we are combining the best of CNN’s content and commercial offering in an innovative way that reflects client and market needs as well as audience expectations.”
The Guardian appoints Spencer deputy editor/senior VP… The Guardian U.S. deputy editor Jane Spencer has taken on additional duties as deputy editor and senior VP of strategy. She also led the U.S. launch of the Guardian’s supporter program and helped build the U.S. philanthropy desk. She also helped with The Guardian’s U.S. audience development strategy. Commenting on her expanded role, Spencer said, “I’m excited to support the Guardian’s next chapter of growth in the U.S. and help drive our wider mission to deliver fearless, independent journalism that deepens our audiences’ understanding of America and the world. We have big ambitions for Guardian US and I look forward to increasing our editorial impact and working closely with the commercial team to build a strong, sustainable business.”
Ahn Do becomes LA Times engagement editor… Anh Do has been named community engagement editor at the Los Angeles Times. For the past 11 years, she served as a metro reporter covering Asian American issues and general assignments. She has also worked at the Seattle Times, the Orange County Register and Nguoi Viet Daily News, the largest Vietnamese-language publication in the nation, launched by her late father. “In a job that bridges our communities and the newsroom, I will give each side the open ear it deserves, finding common ground so they can hear and learn from each other,” Do said. She graduated from USC.
An Axios departure… Danielle Chemtob, an investigative reporter at Axios in Charlotte, N.C., has left. She wrote on Twitter, “I’m immeasurably grateful for the opportunity I’ve had to dive deep on the issues facing our city, from urban renewal to affordable housing. I’m so excited for what’s next, so stay tuned.” Previously, Chemtob was a growth and development reporter at The Charlotte Observer. She freelanced for HuffPost and interned at The Wall Street Journal and Triangle Business Journal. A graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Chemtob can be reached via Twitter or LinkedIn.
…and an Axios a hire… Axios has appointed Analis Bailey to the post of entertainment reporter. Recently, Bailey was a marketing coordinator at Tampa-based Commercial Acoustics, where she produced content for digital platforms, including Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and Twitter. She also worked at USA Today for more than three years and interned at The Ringer and WOLO-TV Ch. 25, an ABC affiliate in Columbia, S.C. Bailey has a B.A. in mass communications from the University of South Carolina.
Houston Landing’s new audience producer… The Houston Landing has hired Angelica Arinze as an audience producer, a post she recently held at Grist. Arinze was an engagement fellow at The Texas Tribune. She interned at and was a freelance writer for The Daily Dot, and was an assistant editor at Her Campus Media. Arinze has a B.A. in journalism from the University of Texas at Austin.
Richmond grad joins Stateline News… Madyson Fitzgerald has joined States Newsroom as a newsletter producer and breaking news reporter for Stateline News. She will work remotely from Richmond. Recently, Fitzgerald worked at the University of Richmond, from where she just graduated with a bachelor’s degree in journalism. There, she was a copy chief at the student newspaper, The Collegian. She interned at the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
Whilding joins OK! Mag as digital reporter…OK! Magazine has tapped Alex Whilding to serve as a digital reporter. She wrote on Twitter, “As a digital news reporter covering all things celebs, TV etc. I can’t wait to get started and I genuinely can’t believe I have the chance to work on a national magazine so soon in my career.” Recently, she was a journalist at The Daily Post Wales.
Hearst’s Global taps Ardis for new role… Sally Ardis is now a senior managing editor for Hearst, Smooth Radio & Gold at Global. Before that, she served as managing editor of Smooth Radio. Ardis has been with Global for more than 15 years. She joined as a regional content solutions director and then took on the role of head of branded content. Ardis graduated from Loughborough University in the U.K.
‘Vice News Tonight’ airs its last episode…Vice Media Group had announced that it was streamlining its news division and has now filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. As part of the restructuring, many notable names were laid off, including editor-in-chief Michael Learmonth. Apart from the layoffs, the company has also canceled its flagship show ‘Vice News Tonight,’ which aired its last episode on May 25.
Moore joins Florida paper as reporter…Michael Moore Jr. has joined the Bradenton Herald in Florida as a safety and justice reporter. He wrote on Twitter, “I’m so excited to work for a paper I grew up reading and to join this excellent team of journalists covering the community I love.” Previously, Moore was a journalist at the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, where he worked as an intern and freelancer. Moore graduated from the University of South Florida St. Petersburg.
The latest Messenger hire… The Messenger has hired business journalist Thornton McEnery to cover hedge funds and other money managers. He has been at The Daily Upside, which covers business and investing, as its executive editor. He also worked at MarketWatch.com, The New York Post, Dealbreaker, Crain’s New York and SNL Financial, now part of S&P Global Markets, where he covered banks and thrifts. McEnery holds a master’s degree from New York University and a bachelor’s degree from Middlebury College.
…and another Messenger hire… The Messenger has also hired Ben White as its chief Wall Street correspondent. Recently, he served as Politico Pro’s chief economic correspondent and author of the “Morning Money” column. White served as a Wall Street reporter for the New York Times, where he shared a Society of Business Editors and Writers award for breaking news coverage of the financial crisis. He also worked at the Financial Times and The Washington Post. He graduated from Kenyon College.
…don’t shoot the Messenger: It’s ANOTHER hire… The Messenger has tapped Richard Teitelbaum to serve as an enterprise writer. For the past six years, he has been a senior contributing writer for Institutional Investor. Previously, he was a news editor at The Wall Street Journal covering corporate finance and has also served as editorial director of Institutional Investor’s Sovereign Wealth Center. He spent more than a decade at Bloomberg as a senior writer and as investing editor for the New York Times Sunday business section. He also spent eight years at Fortune magazine.
