FT’s Brussels bureau chief, Russia’s journo purge, Law360’s ed-at-large: TBN Ticker for Friday Aug. 25

This week’s ticker has many très intéressant items in the journo world to soak up, starting with the Financial Times naming Henry Foy as its Brussels bureau chief. On the international side, Russia has blacklisted 13 UK journalists from The Guardian, BBC and The Telegraph. Meanwhile, Law360 has announced Hilary Russ as its editor at large — and there’s plty more in the recap.

Foy becomes FT’s Brussels bureau chief… Henry Foy has been named the Financial Times’ Brussels bureau chief. In his new role, he will continue to serve as the FT’s European diplomatic correspondent and the voice of “Europe Express,” the FT’s weekday newsletter on European affairs. Previously, he reported on the EU’s foreign policy, relations between Brussels and other world powers, and the diplomatic intrigues between member states. He also served as Moscow bureau chief. Foy graduated from the University of York.

 

 

Russia’s U.K. crackdown… The Russian government has added a significant number of journalists and media executives to its list of people banned from entering the country because the “Russian foreign ministry said it was responding to ‘the aggressive anti-Russia policy pursued by London’ and that ‘work on expanding Russia’s blacklist in response to Britain’s actions is ongoing.’,” reports the Press Gazette. Some of the blacklisted people include, from the BBC: chief executive Deborah Turness, analysis editor Ros Atkins and disinformation correspondent Marianna Spring; from The Guardian: world affairs editor Julian Borger, chief reporter Daniel Boffey and columnist Emily Bell; and from The Telegraph: Colin Freeman, Francis Dearnley and David Knowles, all of whom who work on the publisher’s “Ukraine: the Latest” podcast. Law360 appoints Russ editor at large… Law360 has tapped Hilary Russ to serve as editor at large. In her new role, she will edit and write about corporate bankruptcies for the outlet’s Bankruptcy Authority. Recently, Russ was at Thomson Reuters, where she covered restaurants, municipal bonds and public finance. She was a senior reporter at Portfolio Media, publishers of the Law 360 Newswires, where she launched the New York bankruptcy court beat and the white-collar crime beat. She reported for the Cape Cod Times and interned at Newsday. Russ has a bachelor’s degree from Washington University in St. Louis and a master’s degree from The New School in New York City. Union-Tribune’s Hall departs… Matthew T. Hall, editorial and opinion director at the San Diego Union-Tribune, has left. “It was a good run with great people. We set out to make San Diego better, and something happened along the way,” Hall wrote in his farewell note. “Our readers made us better. Thank you, dear readers, for holding us accountable, for your time and trust, your criticism and kindness. You made a hard job worth it every day.” During his more than two-decade run at the Union-Tribune, Hall held the posts of reporter, columnist, and public engagement editor. Vox hires for the politics beat… Patrick Reis will join Vox on Sept. 18 as a senior politics editor to helm coverage of the 2024 presidential election and to oversee a team of writers focused on national politics and ideas. He joins from Rolling Stone, where he held the same post. He also edited economic policy coverage at The Washington Post and covered the 2016 presidential campaign at Politico. He also reported on climate change and public lands at National Journal, Politico, and E&E News. Reis previously worked at Seattle’s nonprofit weekly street newspaper Real Change News. Jonathan Lai

Politico also hires for the political beat… Politico has tapped Jonathan Lai to serve as a data and politics editor. He comes from the Philadelphia Inquirer, where he has worked for more than a decade, recently as editor of data-driven storytelling. He joined the Inquirer in June 2012 as an intern, and then served as a higher education reporter. Lai has a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Chicago. CNN nabs LA Times’ John… Arit John has joined CNN as a national politics reporter to cover the 2024 presidential election, offering stories that cover crucial issues as voters evaluate the candidate field. Recently, she was a national political correspondent at The Los Angeles Times, where she joined in February 2020 as a reporter. Previously, she reported for The New York Times Styles desk, where she covered cultural trends. She also reported for Bloomberg and covered politics and culture for The Atlantic’s breaking news site The Wire. John, who interned at The Hollywood Reporter, has a B.A. in English literature from UCLA.

LA Times’ Seidman departs… Lila Seidman of the Los Angeles Times wrote on X/Twitter, “I’m no longer the LA Times mental health reporter. It was a difficult, often heart-wrenching beat. But I’m grateful I was able to shine a light on issues that often go unseen.” Seidman had joined the Times in August 2018. She also freelanced for Gawker, LA Times Community News, LA Weekly and Vice. Seidman has a bachelor’s degree from Reed College in Oregon and a master’s degree from Pepperdine University Graduate School of Education and Psychology in California. Weinstein is new EIC of NY Times Cooking… The New York Times has promoted Emily Weinstein to editor in chief of Cooking and Food. Weinstein has been with the Times for more than 15 years, joining as senior staff editor and web producer for Dining and Home. She also held the posts of assistant food editor, editor of NYT Cooking, deputy food editor and Food and Cooking editor. Previously, she was an assistant editor at The Village Voice and an editorial assistant at Condé Nast, where she also interned. Weinstein has a B.A. from Vassar College and a master’s degree from Columbia University.

Milwaukee’s NBC station taps Washburn to serve as sports reporter… WTMJ-TV Ch. 4, an NBC affiliate in Milwaukee, has hired Ashely Washburn as a sports reporter. Commenting on her new role, she wrote on X/Twitter, “Can’t wait to start covering all things Packers, Bucks, Brewers, both the Big Ten & Big East, plus local prep sports.” Recently, Washburn was a sports reporter and anchor at KBZK-TV Ch. 7, a CBS and CW Plus station in Bozeman, Mont. In San Diego, Washburn worked as a freelance story producer for NBC outlet KNSD-TV Ch. 39, and held the posts of assignment editor and field producer/reporter at KUSI-TV Ch. 51. Washburn has a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism from San Diego State University-California State University, where she was a sports writer at the student newspaper The Daily Aztec. New was talk show host of the nationally-syndicated lifestyle program “DayTime” at Nexstar Media Group, and served as host and producer of “Mass Appeal,” a lifestyle show on WWLP-TV Ch. 22, an NBC and CW Plus station in Springfield, Mass. New has a bachelor’s degree in broadcast journalism from the University of Miami.

NY Daily News appoints Cruz politics editor… David Cruz has joined The New York Daily News as a politics editor. Previously, he oversaw political coverage for Gothamist and WNYC (owned by New York Public Radio) as a people and power desk editor. Cruz worked on the general assignment desk as a news editor and served as interim people and power desk editor at Gothamist.com. He was a fellow at National Press Foundation and contributed to City & State. Cruz has a B.A. in communication from Iona University in New York.

STAT hires Trang to cover money and healthcare… STAT News has hired Brittany Trang as a full-time business reporter to cover everything where money intersects with health care. Recently, she was a Sharon Begley science reporting fellow, rotating between the infectious disease, science, policy/business, biotech, and health tech desks. Trang freelanced for Billboard Magazine, Chemistry World, and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and has interned at the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Trang has a B.S. from Ohio State University and a PhD. Since February 2022, Hogan has served as City Hall bureau chief at The New York Post, where she has worked since February 2019. There, Hogan also held the posts of political reporter and Albany bureau chief.  She has worked as a news assistant and video producer at Spectrum and freelanced for New Jersey-based newspaper The Two River Times. Hogan has a B.A. from Marist College in New York.

STV Online hires Franklin as production journalist… STV Online has appointed Beth Franklin as a production journalist. She will begin in September from her journalist role at National World’s JPI Media. Previously, Franklin worked as an editorial specialist and editorial project manager at HarperCollins Publishers. She also freelanced and interned at Reach plc’s Chronicle. Franklin has a bachelor’s and master’s degree from the University of Stirling in Scotland.
