Monica Drake

The New York Times has promoted Monica Drake to deputy managing editor. She has been with the Times since 1999, when she joined as a staff writer.

An excerpt from the announcement reads:

“In her expanded role Monica will join the senior masthead to oversee and advance these efforts, and she will soon name a new head of Culture and Careers who will manage the day-to-day work of the team. In addition to overseeing Culture and Careers, Monica will also work closely with Jacqui Welch and the H.R. team, along with other parts of the company.

“Monica will continue to manage her existing portfolio, which includes providing masthead oversight of the newsroom’s ties to our thriving suite of standalone products. She will continue to help manage the integration of The Athletic with our existing commitment to excellent sports coverage; explore worthy journalism initiatives that have dedicated sponsorship; and oversee special projects, our philanthropic strategy and The Learning Network.”

Drake has also held the posts of assistant editor for arts and leisure, deputy travel editor, travel editor and assistant managing editor.

Drake has a bachelor’s degree from Yale University and a master’s degree from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
