When will biz reporters ask about gas price uptick?
March 13, 2007
Hal Morris, writing on his Grumpy Editor blog, wants to know when business reporters will get off their butts and start asking oil company executives about why gasoline prices are going up.
Morris wrote, “In the ho-hum department: gasoline prices are up for the sixth straight week, reaching a national average of $2.56 for a gallon of regular, reports the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Surprisingly, finds Grumpy Editor, there’s not much complaining about the steady ascent, even when the cost has jumped 5.4 cents from the prior week and about 40 cents (or 18 percent) in six weeks.
“Not a peep from Congress. All’s quiet on newspaper editorial pages. Broadcasters are mute.Â
“Soaring gasoline prices are ‘blamed on strong demand.’ That seems to be the standard line. Grumpy Editor wonders at what point will an ace reporter be dispatched to seek input from oil company executives on true reasons for the big uptick.”
