Washington Post director of video Micah Gelman and executive producer for explanatory video Tom LeGro:
Monica is a natural at explanatory journalism, having produced some of the most creative and engaging pieces since joining the video team in 2019 with the launch of By The Way. They have worked alongside motion graphics editors and countless reporters to explore whether the attack on the Capitol was an attempted coup (a 2022 Webby Award nominee), explained everything from the #FreeBritney movement to the Green Bay Sweep, provided tips for pandemic dogs and owners struggling with separation anxiety and camped out in haunted woods. Most recently, Monica has already begun working with the tech team. They explained how to save your voicemails with Help Desk reporter Chris Velazco and showed how apps are spying on kids with tech columnist Geoffrey Fowler. We are very excited to see this work continue.
Monica will make a return to their native West Coast. They grew up in Torrance, Calif., and hold a BA in film from the University of Southern California. Monica begins their new role this summer, after a cross-country move with their dog, Pony, to join their new colleagues in the San Francisco bureau. Please join us in congratulating Monica.
