The Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing announced Monday that “The Price We Pay: What Broke American Health Care — And How to Fix It” is the winner for its inaugural Best in Business Book Award.

The book was written by Dr. Marty Makary.

“The Price We Pay is fresh, enlightening, accessible, and impactful on the most critical issue of our time, healthcare,” said Pattie Sellers, head judge and co-CEO of SellersEaston Media. “The book has made news, helped to change policy, and offers real solutions,” Sellers said.

Caleb Silver, SABEW vice president, contest chair, and editor in chief of Investopedia said, “Our inaugural contest brought in dozens of excellent business books by our long-form colleagues in the industry this year, which is a testament to the excellent work being done in and out of newsrooms in 2020. Congratulations to Dr. Makary, the runner-ups and all of this year’s finalists on demonstrating the power of business news in this critical era.”

The judges also selected two finalists from the 41 entries received — “No Filter: The Inside Story of Instagram” by Sarah Frier and “Pharma: Greed, Lies, and the Poisoning of America” by Gerald Posner. Frier and Posner will both receive a $500 cash prize with Dr. Makary receiving $1,000.

Dr. Makary will be recognized at SABEW’s virtual conference, Nov. 17-20. The session titled, “A Conversation with Best in Business Book Award Winner,” will take place on Friday, Nov. 20, 3:30 p.m. EST.

The award recognizes and celebrates outstanding business books published between July 30, 2019, and July 30, 2020.
