NYTimes biz reporter leaves for political beat

March 6, 2007

Katherine Seelye, who has covered the media beat for the New York Times for the past two years, has left the paper’s business desk for a job covering politics for its web site, according to a memo posted on Gawker.

Katherine SeelyeThe memo stated, “For the last two years, Kit has been chronicling the changes in the newspaper industry, where she developed a keen appreciation for how the Web is changing journalism.

“We’re thrilled to announce that we are now weaving together those two strands of her career. Kit is becoming our Web political correspondent.

“It is a new role not just for her, but for The Times. And in choosing Kit, we are sending a signal to anyone who had any lingering doubt that the Web is absolutely central to our coverage of the 2008 campaign.

“As the first person to hold the job, Kit will help define it. But the basic idea is clear: To have a political correspondent whose first priority is the Web.”
