Laura Petrecca, the current New York bureau chief and special projects editor for USA Today, is leaving the paper after 12 years.

In an note to friends, Petrecca said she was starting a media consultancy and freelance writing business. Her last day is July 6.

Petrecca was previously the Money section editor at USA Today. In that role, she oversaw day-to-day operations and set long-term strategy for USA Today’s business section and managed nearly two dozen business journalists who work across the U.S.

She was also a business reporter for the paper.

Before joining USA Today, Petrecca was Sunday business editor at the New York Post and also worked five years at Advertising Age as its New York deputy bureau chief.
