DC cable TV channel drops biz news show

July 26, 2010

Jennifer Nycz-Conner of the Washington Business Journal reports that a local cable news channel has canceled a regular 30-minute business news show.

Nycz-Conner writes, “The changes are moving along as Allbritton Communications Co.-owned cable channel NewsChannel 8 begins its transformation into the new online-television hyperlocal hybrid known as TBD.com. One of the first moves is the end of the half hour daily business show ‘Washington Business Tonight.’ The program’s normal 7 p.m. slot will be filled by other programming beginning Monday.

“This does not mean the end of business coverage on the channel, said TBD.com Vice President of Cable News Steve Chaggaris. The channel will still be covering the business scene, but will be spreading it throughout the day. No staff cuts have been made.

“Also, don’t mistake the programming changes as the relaunch. These shifts in formats and programming are gradually ‘bridging the gap’ between now and the official launch of TBD.com, which will happen simultaneously on the website and television. ‘What our schedule looks like today is not what our schedule will look like when we launch,’ Chaggaris said. No word yet on the official relaunch date, but look for it sometime within the next few weeks.”
