BusinessWeek layoffs halted by fire

March 11, 2010

TALKING BIZ NEWS EXCLUSIVE

The 43rd floor of the McGraw-Hill building on Sixth Avenue in midtown Manhattan, which happens to house BusinessWeek magazine, has caught on fire, halting the layoffs underway at the publication.

All staff members were evacuated.

Firemen were entering the building shortly after 4 p.m., and fire trucks lined 49th Avenue, according to one staff member standing outside the building.

UPDATE: We’re told that people have now been allowed back on the 43rd floor, and that apparently it was smoke coming from an overheated motor in the ceiling.
