Josh Block, executive producer for video and audio at Bloomberg Industry Group, sent out the following announcement on Tuesday:

I am excited to announce that Matthew Schwartz will join the audio team to produce and anchor our flagship narrative journalism podcast, [Un]Common Law.  The show will continue to combine storytelling with legal issues and public policy, all with Matt at the helm.

Matt brings to Bloomberg Industry Group years of experience as both a journalist and a lawyer. He produced and co-hosted Unprecedented, an award-winning podcast about landmark Supreme Court cases. The show featured NPR’s Nina Totenberg, and looked at the limits of the First Amendment.

He comes to us most recently from serving as executive producer of Booksmart Studios, a podcast network funded by Substack. He’s also served stints as a reporter for both NPR and WAMU, where he has covered everything from monoclonal antibody Covid-19 treatments to D.C.’s loud siren challenges. Prior to his career in journalism, he worked as an attorney in a D.C. law firm focusing on communications policy issues and advising clients on broadcast ownership rules, and copyright and trademark issues.

Among the numerous honors Matt has racked up are an Edward R. Murrow Award for feature reporting in a large radio market, and a Finalist for an ABA Silver Gavel in the radio category for Unprecedented. Matt grew up in Southfield, Michigan. His undergraduate degree is from the University of Michigan, and he received his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center.

Matt also owns a parrot named Rudy who has more than 3,500 followers on Twitter.

I’m delighted to have Matt joining our team. I couldn’t imagine an audio journalist better suited to take over our narrative podcasts.

Matt starts on Monday. Please join me in welcoming him.

-Josh
