Albany paper to cut Saturday stock listings

May 3, 2008

Rex Smith, the editor of the Albany Times-Union, writes Saturday that the paper is cutting its Saturday stock listings and making other changes to cut costs.

Rex SmithSmith writes, “Second, we will eliminate the two full pages of stock listings in the Saturday paper and reduce the daily market report to a summary in place of the three columns that you’re accustomed to. The summary, which includes companies of local interest, is as much daily information as most investors need; if you want to track your stocks individually, you can create a personal portfolio at timesunion.com.

“We’re looking at consolidating sections, a solution other newspapers have embraced, and we may need to trim other non-local content. We have to watch where the market leads us.

“No editor wants to give up any bit of a newspaper’s coverage. But taking these steps now helps preserve the more valuable content you’ve come to expect from the Times Union. Especially in tough times, we’re committed to keeping our standards high and delivering that vital coverage to you.”
