Yakima Herald-Republic seeks a page designer

Page design matters more than ever.

Because newspapers matter more than ever.

A well-designed newspaper page doesn’t just deliver the news, it brings the news to life.

It adds context. It captures a reader’s imagination.

It’s where words, images and graphics combine as journalism that truly reflects a community.

If you’ve lost your job as a designer at a local newspaper, you know this to be true. You’ve seen what happened to hometown news as papers farmed out their work to far-off design centers.

But you can get back in the design game at the local level — or, if you’re at a early stage in your career, you can move up as part of a family-owned newspaper company.

The Yakima Herald-Republic needs a page designer for our affiliate design hub.

We are part of the family-owned Seatte Times Co. Our design hub builds print and eEditions for the Herald-Republic, the Walla Walla Union-Bulletin and Yakima’s Spanish language weekly, El Sol de Yakima.

Essentially, here’s the job:

  • Review daily budgets with editors.
  • Design and build clean, effective news, sports and feature pages in the BLOX TCMS.
  • Adjust pages after review by editors and send them to press.
  • Design, build and send advance pages.

Position requirements:

  • Exceptional print design skills and news judgment.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Accuracy.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.

Experience: A newsroom internship or experience as part of a post-collegiate newsroom staff designing print pages.

The Yakima Herald-Republic is a daily newspaper in Central Washington, an area dominated by vineyards, hop fields, wineries, brewpubs and eateries. If you enjoy the outdoors, you’ll love it here – we’re close to the Cascade Mountains, rivers, lakes and forests. Appreciate the big city? Seattle and Portland, Oregon, are just a few hours away.

This is a diverse community. Yakima County’s estimated population is 254,000. Half of the county is Hispanic and Latino, so the ability to speak Spanish would help you build valuable relationships with the community.

To apply, send cover letter, resume and links to Greg Halling, executive editor, at ghalling@yakimaherald.com.
