WTOP.com in Washington is seeking a business reporter.

The reporter will investigate, gather, produce and deliver relevant factual business news stories for on-air newscasts twice an hour, online articles and social media platforms, including but not limited to covering breaking business news, generating and developing stories and sources, writing business news scripts, operating audio equipment and interacting with social media.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Selects and researches local, national and international business topics; generates, develops, contacts and interviews sources; maintains notes and audio recordings; writes and edits reports/newscasts.
  • Must have in-depth knowledge of the markets and the terminology associated with them.
  • Produces and delivers stories in appropriate forms for broadcast (live on-air, copy, cut & copy, voice, wrap, features, series, etc.)
  • Writes articles to be distributed online.
  • Proactively participates in the creative cycle of story and program origination with reporters, supervisors, producers and writing staff.
  • Operates computers, recording machines and other broadcast equipment, as necessary.Investigates, gathers, produces and delivers relevant factual business news stories for on-air newscasts twice an hour, online articles and social media platforms, including but not limited to covering breaking business news, generating and developing stories and sources, writing business news scripts, operating audio equipment and interacting with social media.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Four (4) year degree in Journalism, Communications, or equivalent, preferred.
  • Two (2) years of professional broadcasting experience.
  • Expertise in news-gathering, writing, editing, and broadcast production.
  • Knowledge of, and ability to use, effective social media tools.
  • Possess broad knowledge of local business and regional business issues.
  • Ability to conduct online research, word processing, and digital editing.
  • Ability to handle stress effectively.
  • Project an appropriate professional appearance and demeanor.
  • Ability to work in compliance with company policies and procedures.
  • Ability to function in a team environment.
  • Ability to work established schedule and other hours as needed.
