WSJ seeks speed and trending publishing editor

The Wall Street Journal is looking for quick-thinking publishing editors for its breaking-news desk in New York. This group at the heart of the newsroom is responsible for being the first word on many of the most important stories of the day, publishing news across subject areas with speed, precision and authority.

Driven by the Journal’s coverage priorities and audience data, the team will focus on delivering the timely news our readers need, optimized for our online platforms. The team’s breaking news remit will range widely across subjects, from business to general news around the country and beyond. The team will operate in close coordination with other reporting groups across the Journal, often kicking off coverage before passing the baton. In addition to breaking news, this team will look for smart opportunities to join the conversation on other trending stories and topics.

We want an editor who is invigorated by the demands of a 24-hour news cycle and passionate about delivering top-quality stories and visuals to readers across our various publishing platforms. You should be a solid editor with a good grasp of WSJ style, ethics and standards, and publishing practices. Strong news judgment and a good sense for what our audience is looking for are critical, as is solid experience applying SEO best practices and writing headlines that will draw in readers.

This role requires schedule flexibility — the desk will be operating from early morning to late evening, seven days a week. You will report to the Speed & Trending Coverage Chief. While you will likely start the job working remotely, you will eventually be based in our New York office.

You will:

  • Quickly and sharply edit for grammar, style, sense, jargon, accuracy, clarity, diversity, balance and fairness.
  • Write SEO-friendly headlines, add relevant tags and hyperlinks, and work with photo editors to ensure every story has the images needed.
  • Flag incoming content to our platforms for appropriate promotion and assist them in developing alerts language.
  • You may also take feeds from multiple reporters and develop them into a well-rounded piece or pieces when news requires it.

You have:

  • Broad interests and experience across subject areas
  • Proven ability to edit on deadline
  • Solid understanding of and appreciation for audience data and SEO-friendly presentation and what they mean for how we do our jobs
  • Command of newsroom publishing tools, metadata and visual storytelling devices.
  • 3+ years of experience
