The Wall Street Journal is looking for an editor to oversee the newsroom’s storied internship program. The Senior Editor for Newsroom Internships will recruit and manage our interns globally.
You will work closely with the assistant managing editor for talent, the Managing Editor’s Office and other senior editors to ensure that the internship program meets its educational goals and provides value to the newsroom.
The mission of the Journal’s newsroom internship program is to develop the next generation of journalists and news leaders, imbuing them with our ethics and values. We offer promising journalists top-notch training, real work experience and tailored mentorship with the goal of helping them launch long and prosperous careers.
You will help ensure that the intern class is diverse and that the newsroom fosters an inclusive and welcoming experience. We are looking for someone who is committed to the Journal and our mission and who can serve as an ambassador for our values.
You will:
- Recruit, interview, select and onboard a diverse class of interns who bring different backgrounds, experiences and perspectives into our newsroom.
- Be an ambassador for the program, both internally and externally. Represent the Journal at journalism conferences, speaking engagements, colleges/universities and career fairs.
- Prioritize the development of the next generation of superb journalists. Mentor and advise the interns and ensure they have a positive and educational experience.
- Develop a vision for the future of the program that ensures it continues to meet the needs of an increasingly digital newsroom. Evaluate the program schedule and assignments for the interns.
- Manage the intern budget and tracking of both potential candidates and former interns.
- Collaborate closely with the Culture, Training & Outreach team on intern training, conference outreach and strategic university partnerships.
- Build trusted relationships with universities, professors and student-oriented groups.
- Travel to conferences, schools and events to broaden our network and outreach, once it is safe to do so.
- Assist the newsroom talent team with broader recruitment efforts.
You have:
- Several years of experience in journalism and, ideally, experience working with newsroom internship programs or overseeing the work of interns or entry-level journalists.
- A passion for journalism, mentorship and education. A background in journalism training or teaching is a big plus.
- A strong grasp of the evolving digital demands of a global newsroom.
- Excellent presentation skills and ability to represent the best of the Journal’s core attributes at speaking engagements, recruiting events and internal training sessions.
- An inclination toward action: setting agendas, managing projects, change management.
While you may be asked to start remotely, you will eventually be based in our New York office and will report to Sarah Rabil, the Journal’s assistant managing editor for talent.
