The Wall Street Journal is seeking an experienced reporter to cover Switzerland’s important pharmaceutical industry from Zurich. The Alpine country is home to two of the world’s biggest drug makers, Roche and Novartis, both of which are on the cutting edge of health-care science and active acquirers of smaller companies.
We’re looking for a reporter with a record of breaking news on a corporate beat while explaining big shifts in an industry.
Roche, Novartis and other pharmaceutical companies face a host of issues including patent expirations, national health-care system reimbursements and the shepherding of promising treatments through a complicated regulatory approval process. A successful candidate will be comfortable explaining complex ideas – like how drugs work – as well as the nitty gritty of deal making.
The Zurich pharmaceutical reporter will also be responsible for Actelion, Europe’s biggest biotech, as well as Switzerland’s medical device, dental implant and hearing aid makers. The reporter will also be expected to help out with coverage of the World Health Organization, which has become a priority because of the Ebola virus disease outbreak. He or she will work closely with our London based pharma reporter, as well as our pharma team in New York. **
Because the Zurich bureau is small, a successful candidate should expect to take on regular political, social and general news assignments. Fluency in German is preferred.
