WSJ seeks news assistant, print in NY

The Wall Street Journal is looking for a news assistant to work with a team of New York-based editors producing the print edition. This position includes a mix of journalistic and administrative responsibilities.

This is an entry-level position for aspiring journalists planning to become reporters or publishing editors at WSJ. You will start this position remotely but will be later based in the New York office. You will report to the senior news editor, print, and will work evening shift hours.

DUTIES:

  • Oversee several fixtures of the print edition, including the market strip on A1 and the company and people indexes on B2
  • Work closely with senior editors to compile various lists, notes and memos for planning and news coverage
  • Edit different smaller news and graphics items published in the paper
  • Answer phone calls to the newsroom, directing callers to reporters and bureaus and providing information as needed
  • Proofread pages for news and feature sections
  • Pitch and report stories for feature sections

QUALITIES:

  • High level of proficiency in writing and copy-editing, with flawless proofreading skills and knowledge of WSJ style rules
  • The ability to work in a fast-paced newsroom under deadline pressure
  • Pride in and ownership of your own work
