WSJ seeks host for its daily podcast

The Wall Street Journal and Gimlet Media are seeking a digital audio reporter to serve as host of a new 5-day-a-week podcast.

Based in New York, and reporting to the executive producer of the podcast, top candidates for this position will demonstrate excellent journalistic instincts, and creative production and team-management skills. The host of this new, ambitious show will be the voice of its editorial vision.

This person will need to develop deep ties within The Wall Street Journal newsroom in order to work with reporters and editors around the world. We are looking for someone who is a great interviewer and presence on mic, who can go from weighty topics to lighter ones, and who can be a presence that conveys the breadth and depth of the Journal’s reporting.

This person will work closely with the show’s Executive Producer to develop the sound and vision of the show. Top candidates for this position will have a professional background in journalism, on-air presence and writing skills, and have a demonstrated ability to work both in the studio and in the field.

The Show:

This new daily podcast will bring the Journal’s strongest reporting to our ambitious audience each day, sharing deep insights, context, analysis and storytelling from the Journal’s well-sourced reporters and editors in a format that is best suited for audio. We will draw from the Journal’s unparalleled business reporting and global news operation, plus Gimlet’s audio expertise, to create this new show.

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Hosting a daily podcast
  • Reporting topics of interest to The Wall Street Journal’s audience
  • Sourcing timely news and archival audio
  • Recording studio and field interviews
  • Partnering with news reporters and editors in New York and globally to share their stories and reporting
  • Proposing new and original ideas for timely and relevant programming
  • Ensuring that all journalistic and legal standards are followed
  • Completing additional duties as assigned

Key candidate requirements:

  • At least eight years’ experience working in a daily news environment, preferably at a global news organization
  • Ability to convey news and tell business and markets stories in creative ways
  • Ability to serve as a listener surrogate and break down complicated topics for listeners
  • Demonstrated ability to do compelling two-ways and interviews
  • Demonstrated experience working in news or narrative audio
  • Track record of hosting and reporting quality audio content efficiently under tight deadline constraints
  • Knowledge of current events, U.S. and world politics, and economics, as well as a nose for news
  • Clear communicator with exceptional written and collaboration skills
